The 2016 Fiat 500X is turning out to be a distinctive vehicle in the SUV market. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU)’s 500X SUV model borrows from the style book of its smaller sibling the Fiat 500.
Coming to size, the Fiat 500X is larger and taller than the 500. On top of that, the 500X is the first Fiat featuring all-wheel drive. That feature will come handy for Fiat Chrysler in battling for market share in the fiercely competitive SUV market.
The lower oil prices have boosted demand for SUVs, but it has also led to a brutal competition among manufacturers of such vehicles.
What the Fiat 500X has to offer
The Fiat 500X is a 14-foot-long SUV equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine. With that, the cute SUV provides more horsepower as well as torque compared to its four-cylinder non-turbo rivals. That is another distinction Fiat Chrysler is hoping to give it an edge in the competitive SUV market.
Standards in SUVs options in Fiat 500X
While Fiat Chrysler has tried to give the 500X everything it needs to be competitive in the SUV market, there are a few notable downsides to the vehicle. For instance, while features such as rearview camera and Bluetooth phone connectivity have become standard in many new SUV models, they are only offered as options in the 500X. In addition to that, the 500X doesn’t offer a competitive cargo space, which my hurt its appeal to drivers eying a SUV to ferry their families alongside luggage.
Is Fiat 500X more affordable?
The entry level Fiat 500X costs $20,995. With that you get a SUV offering 160-horsepower, front-wheel drive and manual transmission. If you fork out a bit more, $22,595, you still get a front-wheel drive SUV, but one that comes with nine-speed automatic transmission and offering 180-horsepower. Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone operation is added in this package.
For $25,630, you get more features in the Fiat 500X. There you have an all-wheel SUV with nine-speed automatic transmission. If you up to $33,000, you get a front-wheel 500X, equipped with sunroof, leather seats and backup camera.
The new Fiat 500X will battle for market share with 2016 Mazda CX-3 and 2017 Honda HR-V.
