County Attorney Andrew Thomas announced today that Christopher Michael Alonso has been sentenced for the First Degree Murder shooting death of Public Defender Justin Blair.
According to facts revealed at trial, Alonso fired at a vehicle during a road rage incident in Phoenix in 2004. Blair was not involved in the incident. He was in a third vehicle and was killed by a stray bullet. The defendant latter bragged about the shooting.
Alonso, who is a US citizen, fled to Mexico to avoid prosecution. Mexican officials located Alonso and turned him over to Glendale Police. Alonso was then indicted on charges including First Degree Murder, 5 counts of Attempted First Degree Murder and drive by shooting.
On May 21, 2009 a jury found the defendant guilty as charged. On November 20, 2009 he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility or parole for 25 years plus an additional 54.5 years. The sentence means that Alonso must serve 79.5 years before he is eligible for parole. Deputy County Attorney Susie Charbel prosecuted the case.
Thomas stated, “We appreciate the judge’s sentence and the fine work of the police and our prosecutor.”
